I Got My Voice and “Were Moving” I’m; Buying a Farm. Growing up, I never thought I was destined for great things. Especially when you come from parents who got divorced when we kids were little. After enduring years of abuse, neglect, and hell at both houses, you are made to feel worthless. Eventually, you start to believe it. Carrying our lives in a suitcase getting shipped back and forth, we kids never felt like we had a safe place or a real family to go to. Yes everyone around knew it was happening and never helped. Hell, we were just trying to survive.

I knew from a young age that I was going to be the one to break the abuse cycle and create a loving home I felt safe in. I was highly successful at building that great environment for my family along with being a mom. But now that the kids are all grown up, and flew the coop, I realized that this wasn’t just some passing dream.  I knew that I was going to make it a reality, and I did just like that. I plan on owning a farm!

1. My journey to becoming a farmer

I started this blog to document my journey to becoming a farmer. I didn’t think I would be able to make this dream a reality, but now I realize that everyone has dreams. Why do most dreams and aspirations never get talked about? I was never afraid to tell anyone about my dream of wanting to be a farmer. But getting my voice heard without getting a laugh was disheartening. How freeing it was to finally get the courage and announce “We’re moving!” How I wish I had a picture of everyone’s face when I said “It is going to be a farm.” I never thought I would make it this far, but here I am. I’m finally doing what I’ve always wanted to do. I’m buying a farm and do not plan on going back to the city.

3. The journey to buy my first farm

Growing up, I always had a dream of owning a farm. I loved the idea of being my own boss, of growing my own food, canning for winter storage, and being able to feed my family. I want to explore the possibility of grants and other opportunities for help to maybe offset some costs. It will help me find the independence outside of motherhood that I need. And maybe, if I am lucky, generate some income. I didn’t have the land. The only experience I had was growing vegetables, and taking care of a few animals while growing up on a homestead.

I did have a raised garden bed in the backyard but it only produced enough to do some minor canning. When I was young, I was fascinated by all the animals that lived on the farm, but I also had a special love for the cows that lived next to my grandma. One of my favorite childhood memories is of being at her house and being able to milk the cows with my uncles. I loved that experience and I am grateful I got those kinds of memories. Not everyone is lucky enough to have grandparents living next door to a dairy farm. I was determined more than ever to make my dream a reality.

5. Why I decided to move to a farm

I’ve always had a passion for farming, but I never thought it would actually happen. But I’m moving to a farm and I’m so excited!
I’ve always been interested in agriculture and the farming process. I’ve always loved how farming is a back-to-basic lifestyle. It’s something you can truly be proud of, and it’s not something that’s going to go out of style anytime soon.
Farming is also a very sustainable industry. You don’t need a lot of things to run a farm; you don’t need fancy equipment or a lot of money. You just need some land and a lot of passion. I believe that everyone has the potential to be a farmer on some scale. It doesn’t matter where you are in life. You just have to have passion and drive.

6. How I am preparing to become a farmer

I’m almost 50 years old and have always wanted to self-sustain and leave the smallest carbon footprint possible. The planet needs help in healing and I got love to share. I love the idea of being in control of my own life and my own destiny. It’s freeing when you finally get started. I don’t have a degree in environmental science but I love to learn new things. I’ve always been fascinated by the natural world and the way plants and animals interact with each other. I learned a lot by following farming blogs and podcasts for years. I’ve also been reading books on the subject. I’m ready to take the next step and buy a farm.

7. The process of making my dream a reality

The process of becoming a farmer can be daunting, but it’s also an incredibly rewarding experience. There are many factors to consider when deciding whether or not farming is the right career for you, but the most important thing is to have a passion for the work. If you’re unsure about whether or not farming is the right for you, start by reading about the processes and the different types of farms and farming available in your area. Don’t forget that the local farmers love it when you contact the farm and plan a visit to gather advice. It shows you what it takes to be a successful farmer. Once you’ve decided that farming is the right retirement for you, it’s time to start the paperwork and start searching for land. You’ll need to find land or an owner who is willing to lease or sell you their parcel.

It might necessary to look into getting a farm loan or help with grants. I was surprised to see all the different types of grants out there for beginners needing help starting in the farming industry. Once you’ve acquired the land and the loan, it’s time to start building your farm. There are many different ways to build a farm, but the most important thing is to have a plan. Again, I can not express enough how important it is to research the different types of crops and livestock that are best suited for your area. Once you have a plan, start building your farm.

8. Challenges I faced starting this journey

There are many challenges one faces when becoming a farmer. The biggest challenge is making people believe you. I know I had to fight for it.
I never imagined when I started this journey that I would have to win over people who said I was crazy. That I would have to prove to them that I could actually do this. It’s not easy, but I’m here to tell you that it can be done and it’s worth it.
